Gear Driven Exciter 1191 RPM
(with single coupling)
These exciters and the brush riggings to which they are connected are built and shipped as complete units having their own bases, housings, and ventilation systems, thus becoming by themselves a complete power plant of high reliability. An interior lighting system allows observation of the various parts through inspection windows in the housing. Large removable panels allow access to all the various parts except the pilot exciter commutator which is serviced through a door in the housing end shield. Accessible through the same door, mounted on the end of the exciter shaft and rotating with it, is as adapter for a portable balance set. This adapter should be left permanently in position so that in case balance refinements on the main unit become necessary the balance equipment may be plugged in and readings for the first correction taken without shutting the machine down.
Electrical connections from the main and pilot exciters, as well as the silvered collector brush rings, are carried through the base by means of heavy-copper bars to that all connections may be easily made to station cables which may be brought to the machine through a single opening in the foundation. Wired to the same point are connections to the temperature detectors place in the exciter air circuits and to the oil temperature indicators in the gear and bearing drains, if used.
By means of speed reducing gear the exciter is driven at 1191 rpm or approximately one-third the speed of the main unit in order to reduce the peripheral speed of the commutator.
When using the balance adapter, the necessary step-up gear ration is 130/43 for 60-cycle machines and 123/49 for 50 cycles. Exciters used with 3000 rpm generators run at 1195 rpm.
